Sometimes the best discoveries happen by accident. While working on the post for AM's trip to Germany, I was digging through his desktop hard drive and unearthed a few additional previously unreleased DJ AM mixes! All of them are from Spring/Summer of 2008 prior to the tragic plane crash. Needless to say this was a very exciting find!
The first of these newly discovered mixes that I'm releasing is his opening set from former LA hot spot Hyde Lounge. The original Hyde Lounge on Sunset was a very small room with a capacity of around 100. It was a major celebrity hang out when Adam played there. And just like most Los Angeles clubs, the celebs found a new place to frequent after a bit of time and the location remained open for a while after but it was no longer "the spot to be" in LA. The original Hyde on Sunset that this mix originated from closed many years ago.
The Hyde brand grew and expanded later on with another, much larger Hyde on Sunset just a stones throw away from the original. The brand kept growing to the point that they STILL have a Hyde Lounge inside Staples Center (or Crypto.com arena as it's now called), the home of the Lakers. The one inside Staples... errr Crypto... is a massive 4,000 square foot lounge on the suite level. They also have a Hyde Lounge inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. So this is a nightlife brand that started very small but grew over the years into something that is now a VIP spot inside sports arenas.
This previously unreleased mix from 2008 is DJ AM playing an eclectic, alternative style set very similar in vibe to his Elton mixes before it gradually moves towards some classic R&B to finish off. I've clipped off the clubby section of this recording as it sounds quite similar to other mixes from this time period and I focused on the opening set as I feel it represents new ground for his personal music tastes during this time period.
Adam's close friend Niko, who also designed all of AM's iconic logos & was a fixture for years at AM's gigs, has supplied photos from his appearances at Hyde along with info about the venue to help us paint the picture of the venue and the time period (look at that Blackberry that Aoki is holding!). Niko also designed the cover art for this mix... thanks Niko! I'm convinced there is not a person alive who witnessed Adam play more hours behind the decks than Niko did.

This early night set from Hyde features quite a few alternative tracks that aren't on any of AM's previous eclectic/alternative mixes which, in many ways, makes it feel similar to the Elton mixes. If you like those mixes, I think you will dig this one. Late in the mix as the room starts filling up, it goes towards some classic R&B jams. The mix is 51 minutes long and was the opening set for the night. When Adam did local LA gigs, many times he would want to do the ENTIRE night without an opener and set the tone himself. He was never afraid to put the work in even though he was one of the biggest DJs in the world. Without further ado, here is DJ AM's opening set live at Hyde in Los Angeles (July 12th, 2008):
